White House Talent Pipeline Challenge Vital Path for Construction Careers

Washington, D.C. (June 17, 2022) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today:

Today’s White House convening of stakeholders from labor, management, education, and community groups to ramp up our nation’s skilled workforce is an important step towards ensuring that the tremendous opportunities created by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) lead to good, family-supporting union jobs and careers in construction.

Today’s meeting is yet another demonstration of the commitment of this President and this Administration to investing in our nation’s infrastructure, fostering diversity and opportunity for every American, and the creation of good-paying, middle-class union jobs.

LIUNA has a robust system of pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship-readiness, and registered apprenticeship programs that have been working full tilt even as we come out of the COVID recession, and currently many of our programs have record numbers enrolled. With the certainty of construction jobs that the IIJA created, our members and employers are committed to expanding even further to meet workforce training needs.

LIUNA members are proud to build the roads and bridges, energy and broadband infrastructure, EV stations, and water systems that strengthen our communities. We applaud the Administration’s steadfast commitment to good union jobs and local hiring.

LIUNA stands ready to work with the Administration, local governments, and willing employers to build lasting pathways for the construction workers of the future.
