With Stopgap Measure, Congress Must Now Act to Avert Another Crisis

Washington, D.C. (October 2, 2023) – Brent Booker, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today:

Thankfully bipartisan majorities in Congress acted at the 11th hour to avoid a government shutdown – for now.

Shame on the MAGA extremists in Congress who played a dangerous game, which would have resulted in cuts to services for veterans, the elderly, the poor, and working families. The cuts would also have gutted transportation funding, training, education, and DOL enforcement. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers and service contract workers, including LIUNA members, would have suffered a furlough because of these irresponsible extremists.

The Continuing Resolution allows Congress a 45-day reprieve before they must act again to avert another crisis.

LIUNA urges lawmakers to act responsibly by working together to ensure we do not face another race against the clock right before the holiday season.
