Washington, D.C. (June 24, 2015) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today regarding the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee mark-up of a six-year transportation bill:
A long-term Highway Bill is the key to protecting motorists’ safety, creating good jobs and rebuilding a transportation infrastructure to keep our nation competitive. The six-year, bipartisan bill put forth by the Committee represents light-years of progress over the more than 30 destructive short-term patches Congress has been able to muster in the last decade. Congress should pass this bill and pair it with responsible action to pay for it. The alternative is continuing to allow needless injuries and deaths due to poor road conditions, continuing to forgo the creation of thousands of good jobs and continuing to stand idly by while U.S. competitiveness sinks due to a second-rate transportation infrastructure.
