Washington, D.C. (December 3, 2015) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today on the Senate vote to repeal the Cadillac tax:
The U.S. Senate acted with great courage and resolve today in voting for the Heller amendment to repeal the so-called Cadillac tax. The Senate’s 90-10 vote in favor of repeal showed extraordinary unanimity, strength of purpose, and a willingness to put aside political differences to solve real problems. This is a shining example of how bipartisanship can, and should, work.
The Heller repeal amendment, which is attached to the reconciliation bill, will likely not become law. However, with the strong bipartisan support demonstrated today, as well as the leadership on this issue by Senators Heller and Heinrich, LIUNA is very encouraged that this regressive, working-class tax can be repealed once and for all.
LIUNA is ready to work with Congress to get the job done on repeal, before millions of blue-collar, working-class Americans are harmed by this tax.
