Washington, D.C. (July 31, 2023) – Brent Booker, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today: LIUNA celebrates completion of Plant Vogtle’s Unit 3 - the first new nuclear unit to come online in 30 years. The Georgia nuclear plant has been years in the building and is now online and providing emission-free energy to Georgians for decades to come.

Thousands of skilled and experienced LIUNA members working in partnership with Bechtel Corp., Georgia Power, and Southern Company made the completion of this critical project possible. The project was constructed with remarkable safety and efficiency with tens of millions of project-hours completed without a single lost-time injury.

Through LIUNA’s strong network of apprenticeships and apprenticeship readiness programs, construction of Plant Vogtle has also been a lifeline to rewarding careers and provided life-changing opportunities in the rural community in which it was built.
