Washington, D.C. (Nov. 18, 2025) — The Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) celebrates today’s major step forward for working people: a bipartisan discharge petition on the Protect America’s Workforce Act (H.R. 2550) has reached the required 218 signatures, forcing the U.S. House of Representatives to schedule a vote within seven legislative days on restoring union rights for more than one million federal workers.
The bipartisan bill, championed by Reps. Jared Golden (ME-02) and Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01), would reverse former President Trump’s executive order that stripped union rights and gutted collective bargaining protections across federal agencies. Those attacks have only escalated in recent months as part of the broader DOGE/Project 2025 blueprint which has resulted in canceled union contracts, silenced worker voices, and weakened protections for more than 400,000 federal workers including thousands of our LIUNA members.
With key signatures yesterday from Reps. Mike Lawler (NY-17) and Nick LaLota (NY-01), the Protect America’s Workforce Act is now guaranteed a vote on the House floor.
“LIUNA members know firsthand that union rights are fundamental to safe, dignified, middle-class jobs,” said LIUNA General President Brent Booker. “Federal workers deserve the same respect and the same right to collective bargaining that every working person should have. This bipartisan coalition proves that standing up for workers is not and should never be a partisan issue.”
Across the country, more than 70% of Americans--Democrats, Republicans, and Independents--support unions. Today’s bipartisan majority shows Congress is finally catching up with the American people. Passing this bill would rein in an illegal power grab and restore the basic right of federal workers to organize, bargain, and serve the public with dignity.
