January Jobs Report: Construction Workers Hit Even Harder

Washington, D.C. (February 7, 2014) – In response to the Bureau of Labor Statistics January jobs report showing that construction workers were hit even harder this month than last month with the unemployment rate worsening to 12.3 percent in January from 11.4 percent in December, Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers' International Union of North America – made the following statement:

“With men and women working in construction getting hit even harder this month than last month, we can’t afford to wait on those we elect to promote the development of America’s energy resources and rebuild our roads and bridges. The 10,000 jobs added in heavy and civil engineering construction sector shows the powerful impact of investing in energy and transportation infrastructure. So there is no excuse for further delay of projects like the Keystone XL Pipeline, which is a lifeline to good, family-supporting jobs, and efforts to pass a new Highway Bill. These investments offer the best potential to open new career paths for millions of struggling families and help our economy to continue leading the world. The half-million members of LIUNA are ready to get the job done.”
