Washington, D.C. (September 1, 2026) — With passage of the Continuing Resolution, Congress has acted to extend some federal surface transportation programs avoiding disruption to critical programs.

However, we are concerned that the continuing resolution provides only a partial extension of enacted transportation programs rather than maintaining the full investment levels.

These investments support roads, bridges, transit systems, and other infrastructure that keep our economy moving, communities connected, and hundreds of thousands of skilled construction workers on the job, many of whom are LIUNA members.

Short-term extensions and funding reductions create real uncertainty for states, local governments, contractors, and workers. They delay projects, disrupt long-term planning, increase costs, and put good-paying jobs at risk.

By punting these issues past the mid-term elections, Congress has assured LIUNA members that the only jobs at stake are theirs.

Now it must finish the job. We urge congressional leaders to restore full transportation funding and work together on a strong, long-term surface transportation reauthorization that provides states and communities the certainty they need to plan, build, and invest.

America cannot build world-class infrastructure with stop-and-start funding. Sustained federal leadership and investment are essential to safer travel, stronger communities, a more competitive economy, and good, family-sustaining jobs.
