Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Rule Will Bring Accountability to Federal Contracting

Washington, D.C. (August 25, 2016) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement on the announcement of a final rule for the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order:

With issuance of a final rule for the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order, millions of workers – including thousands of LIUNA members - employed by government contractors will have stronger protections on the job.

The executive order is a new tool to hold accountable employers who are guilty of wage theft, safety violations, and discrimination. For too long contractors with terrible workplace records were awarded contracts with little to no accountability. With this new rule the federal government will award contracts using tax payer dollars to contractors who respect the law and its workers. There will be no more free passes for contractors that put workers’ well-being at risk.
