Washington, D.C. (July 30, 2019) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today:
LIUNA commends Chairman Barrasso (R-WY) and Ranking Member Carper (D-DE) for their leadership on America’s Transportation Infrastructure Act of 2019. This essential piece of legislation would authorize $287 billion from the Highway Trust Fund over five years to support our nation’s vital roadways and bridges while cutting back red tape that unnecessarily delays such projects.
This bill would address major infrastructure needs while creating thousands of good middle-class jobs across the country. LIUNA members are ready to BUILD.
America’s infrastructure used to be the envy of the world but now the American Society of Civil Engineers ranks our nation’s overall infrastructure with a D+ grade. Forty percent of our bridges are older than their intended design life and more than two out of every five miles of America’s urban interstates are congested.
Failure to act is not only putting Americans at risk, but also costing our economy and our country jobs. It’s time to stop talking and start doing. We ask for the swift passage of America’s Transportation Infrastructure Act through the markup process and the full support of the Senate.
