Leadership Education Series

LIUNA Leadership I:

This class is now a blended format comprised of online learning, which is required to be completed prior to attending, as well as a two day classroom training. The class provides insight into the basic operations and resources of LIUNA, and how those resources enhance the endeavors of union leadership. This class is intended for union officers and staff from construction locals with less than two years experience. Some of the topics include:

• LIUNA Policies & Departments
• Financial Reporting
• Union Officer Duties
• Labor Law Issues
• Davis-Bacon: Prevailing Wages
• Jurisdiction
• Immigration Reform

LIUNA Leadership II:

A continuation of Leadership I, this 5-day class has a more focused and detailed perspective of key topics. Teaching methods are more skills based, and encourage student interaction through hands-on exercises and workshops. Some of the topics include:

• Public Speaking
• Leadership Characteristics
• Building Constituencies
• Gaining Market Share
• Conflict Resolution

LIUNA Leadership III:

This 5-day offering is a continuation of Leadership I & II which takes the Education Program to a more advanced level. Participants explore several new topics and are challenged to become fully engaged in the process through group interaction and hands-on exercises. The topics include:

• Construction Labor Law
• Immigration
• Fundamentals of Collective Bargaining
• Pre-Job Conferences
• Contract Administration/Written Communication
• Running Effective Meetings
• Jurisdiction

Business Managers’ Leadership Academy:

This offering is intended for LIUNA Business Managers and attendance satisfies the GEB Resolution 7 mandate for their leadership training. Each topic is offered in a 1 and 1/2 day class, allowing participants an opportunity to attend one to three classes over a week long period. Class topics change every year so Business Managers can attend the BMLA as often as their leadership training needs dictate.

Secretary-Treasurer Training:

This 3 and 1/2 day program orients/refreshes Secretary-Treasurers in their primary job responsibilities. Local Union bookkeepers are also encouraged to attend for training in computer financial transactions. Topics include:

• Governing Authorities and Constitutional Duties
• Financial Management: Budgeting, Bonding and Investments
• Per Capita Tax Reporting
• LIUNA’s Audit Program
• Record Keeping
• Expense Authorization

Secretary-Treasurer Refresher Training:

This 1 and 1/2 day program is for Secretary-Treasurers who have been in office five years or more and just want a refresher, or for Business Managers who are not Secretary-Treasurers but want to understand the responsibilities involved so they can properly oversee their staff. Topics include:


• Per Capita Tax Reporting
• OLMS Findings
• LM's & 990's
• Bonding
• Policy Development
