Highway Bill Means Work for LIUNA Members

The Highway Bill - which provides investment for America's roads, bridges and transit systems  - will expire October 1, 2014 and funds are projected to run out in advance of that date. Without action by Congress, projects will start grinding to a halt as states stop receiving funds for highway construction projects.  This will cause job losses and worsen America's transportation infrastructure.

Deteriorating roads are a threat to public safety and to our quality of life.

  • Every year, 25 bridges in the U.S. collapse – a fourth of bridges are deficient or obsolete.
  • The lifespan for most bridges is 50 years and the average bridge is already 45 years old.
  • According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, roadway conditions are a significant factor in about one-third of traffic fatalities.

America's roads and bridges need a raise.

  • In order to fully fund the Federal Highway Trust Fund, the gasoline tax, which was last increased in 1993, will need to be increased by a total of 15 cents phased in over the next three years.
  • The gas tax must be devoted to transportation projects.

A strong Highway Bill funded through an increase in the gas tax will make us safer and create good jobs.

  • The gas tax will create jobs for construction workers on projects that are critical for our safety and economic competitiveness.
