Washington, D.C. (July 22, 2016) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America –made the following statement today on the nomination of Donald Trump as the 2016 Republican Nominee for President:
In his closing remarks at the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump’s angry rhetoric underscored his lack of real policy solutions, absolute ignorance of sound public policy, and his inability to rally our country around a positive vision for economic prosperity and fairness.
Donald Trump’s vision for America - and the RNC platform that he champions - reflects a policy outlook that would disempower the working-class, wall America off from the community contributions of our neighbors in the South, undermine union rights, attack fair pay and overtime protections, and women’s right to equal pay.
The RNC platform calls for repeal of Davis Bacon law; putting at risk a law which has helped ensure that public investment in construction doesn’t drive down local wages since 1931. This is a direct attack on the wages and livelihoods of LIUNA members and millions of fellow tradesmen and women in the construction industry.
The RNC platform also re-affirms support for so-called right-to-work laws; which undermine unions, drive down wages and working conditions, and threaten pensions and benefits.
The contrast with the soon to be released Democratic National Committee Platform and the vision of the Democratic Nominee, Secretary Hillary Clinton, couldn’t be starker.
Secretary Clinton has earned the support of the hard-working men and women of LIUNA because she is a true champion of union and working class values, who advocates for raising wages, protecting the rights of working men and women, and comprehensive immigration reform which honors the contributions of immigrants.
LIUNA members will be on the frontlines fighting to elect Secretary Clinton and candidates at every level of government who will stand up for the working class.
The half-million members of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – are on
the forefront of the construction industry, a powerhouse of workers who are proud to build America.
