Washington, D.C. (March 30, 2016) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Friedrichs case:
The ruling on Friedrichs affirms 40 years of legal precedent and marks a significant defeat to the billionaires who backed the suit and whose aim is to weaken and destroy the collective bargaining rights that have enabled generations of public sector workers to organize for better wages, benefits, and working conditions.
The Friedrichs case was an assault on the fundamental rights of millions of Americans in the public sector; including tens of thousands of dedicated and hardworking LIUNA members. The narrowly decided victory underscores the crucial role of the President and the 2016 Presidential election in determining the future of the Supreme Court. With several vacancies on the Supreme Court anticipated in the coming years, working men and women need a President who will appoint Justices ready to defend the right to organize.
LIUNA members will be working hard to elect Hillary Clinton as the next President because she is the champion working people need in the White House.
