DOE Quadrennial Energy Review: Step Forward for Long-Term Energy Vision

Washington, D.C. (April 21, 2015) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today on the release of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Quadrennial Energy Review:

The Quadrennial Energy Review (QER) outlines the very serious challenges facing our nation’s energy infrastructure from aging pipelines in need of replacement and an outdated electrical grid to the need for streamlining the permitting of new pipelines to ease bottlenecks. Sweeping changes in the energy industry with the boom in natural gas have created a need for construction of thousands of miles of pipelines to meet the demand for safe and reliable transportation of fuel. The QER is a step forward in laying out the building blocks for a long-term vision for our nation’s energy future.

LIUNA is concerned not only as the workers who build and maintain our nation’s energy infrastructure but also because meeting our energy needs is about securing our economic prosperity. Implementing smart energy policy can help spur continued growth, put millions of men and women to work, and make our nation energy independent while building a foundation to slow global warming.

Our needs are too great to be ignored. Congress should get to work to address the recommendations made in the Quadrennial Energy Review.
