Labor Day Message 2009

Sisters & Brothers,

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you, and your families, a happy Labor Day. As Americans enjoy the last long weekend of the summer it is worth reflecting on what we celebrate on this holiday and not let it get lost among the noise of barbeques and football games.

When the first Labor Day was celebrated in 1882, the 10,000 workers who marched in New York City put their jobs on the line by choosing to not be at work that day, but rather to celebrate the work they put in every day. The tradition started by our proud union brothers and sisters has made this American holiday our holiday. It is a day to remember the many accomplishments of labor's collective struggles in creating and improving the standard of living for the America working class. A day to reflect upon our collective struggles to bring justice to the job site and to make certain that those without a voice are always heard. A day to reflect for a moment and fully appreciate all the rights and benefits of working under a union contract. A day to be thankful for those who took up this struggle before us. Most importantly, it is a day to renew our commitment and reenergize our dedication to the many struggles that confront us and challenge us in the days ahead as trade unionists. This is what Labor Day commemorates — the dedication, commitment and tremendous courage of labor unions and union members throughout history.

I am honored and proud to call you my sister, my brother and I am grateful for your involvement and leadership in this country’s greatest labor union – the Laborers’ International Union of North America.
