Indiana's roads and highways are falling behind on needed maintenance and repair despite significant investments from the state’s Major Moves program, which began in 2005, and the 2009 American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. Nearly a third of major roads are in mediocre or poor condition and congestion costs Indianapolis drivers 24 million hours per year in lost time. Also, while Indiana has nearly 10,000 miles of road that are rated as being in fair, mediocre or poor condition only 3,650 miles of pavement preservation are expected to be improved by the end of 2012.
Building Indiana so Indiana Works
- The single most important mechanism to Build Indiana so Indiana Works is through our current transportation investment law – called SAFETEA-LU, or the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users which funds the Highway Trust Fund and is set to expire at the end of 2010. The upcoming transportation bill must provide for at least $565 billion between now and 2015 to meet existing needs - including $375 billion for highways.
- Investing in 132 unfunded transportation projects not currently included in the Indiana Department of Transportation’s 2030 Plan could create 463,500 jobs over the next 20 years and create a lasting benefit for all of Indiana.
