Building Our Communities

LIUNA members of the Public Employees Department work in all levels of government helping our communities, healing the sick and protecting our country.

Highlights:

New Members in the Indian Health Service

2009 was a banner year for organizing for the federal health care workers of the Indian Health Service (IHS). As a result of both internal and external organizing, the IHS National Council, made up of five participating locals throughout the United States, saw their membership increase by 1,283 new members. This outstanding result came from a combined organizing effort of the IHS National Council and the Public Employee Department, as well as the many stewards, leaders, and dedicated members of LIUNA Locals 205, 888, 1376, 1386, and 1396.

Better Sick Leave Benefit for FERS Employees

Congress recently passed a provision supported by LIUNA in the FY 10 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that allows workers in FERS to count unused sick leave toward their retirement. The provision is phased in over a four-year period. Until Dec. 31, 2013, employees would receive a 50% credit for unused sick time; they will receive full credit beginning January 1, 2014. This provision will give FERS workers the same benefit that their CSRS counterparts already have. It will also promote efficiency in government by preventing the “FERS flu” and gives FERS workers the benefit of having those sick days count toward their annuity. Read LIUNA’s support letter.

LIUNA Helps With Relief Effort in Haiti

In recognition of the tragic and unimaginable devastation and loss of life that occurred on Tuesday, January 13 in Haiti, LIUNA was proud to donate $25,000 to the American Red Cross to assist with the massive relief effort currently underway in that nation. "This donation is made on behalf of the many LIUNA members with family in Haiti, as well as all LIUNA members - the men and women who have always stepped forward when others are in a time of need," General President Terry O'Sullivan said. "Our prayers are with the people of Haiti as they struggle with this horrific disaster." In addition to the International Union's contribution to relief efforts, numerous LIUNA affiliates, including LIUNA Local Union 1652 - whose membership includes many men and women of Haitian origin with family members in the island nation - collected donation items.
